Thermal Printer Set-up

A quick tip when installing a new thermal printer and using custom roll labels. Prior to shipping the printer to the customer, a test printing was done to match the correct ribbon with the label sub straight and was successfully completed. The printer arrived at the customer’s location and the printer software was loaded. The printer set up was performed but no data output appeared on the labels. Thinking the printer was damaged in shipping, the customer was prepared to return it for inspection. One last shot was tried before returning the printer. Tech support suggested setting the print speed to the lowest setting and complete one more test print. Success! The printer works fine and customer is up and running.

MSI Answers The Call For Fast Prototyping

Over the past 5 years the manufacturing industry has seen their standard lead times shorten due to the "need it now" mentality of the customer. Marking Systems has made the effort to make it easier on purchasing and engineers who need samples fast. We have done this by purchasing several new technologies to speed up the print process and finishing process. These new processes have enabled us to reduce lead times, lower price, and eliminate set up and die charges.

Some of the new processes for prototyping include:

- UV cured digital printer that enables us to print on almost any surface including Polycarbonate.

- A solvent based Roland Sol-Jet for top printing on Polyesters and Vinyl’s

- A Zund digital finishing and cutting machine. This is target registered, therefore eliminating the need for a die. It also uses a milti facetted blade instead of a laser which eliminates burn marks while holding a +/- .010'' tolerance

Marking Systems Domed Labels

Last year Marking Systems installed their very own clean room for domed labels. We are one of a hand full of companies that does the entire doming process in house. This includes all of the printing, the die cut, and the final doming process.

The doming process is rather simple but unknown to many people. A domed label is constructed of a basic polyester or vinyl label. The excess material is then picked and peeled away leaving only the label and the liner that it comes on. The labels then are given a coat of polyurethane. The amount of polyurethane is measured according to the size of the label, and comes out the consistency of syrup. After it has been poured it runs to the edges of the label and the surface tension keeps it from running over the edges.

There are several benefits to using a domed label on your product. The most obvious is that it adds a 3D look to the label and truly works as a decorative piece. Another benefit is that domed labels are very tolerant to UV and also to chemicals making them good in outdoor or harsh environments. The Polyurethane that Marking Systems uses is automotive grade and is air dried. This prevents the yellowing seen with heat or UV cured doming.

The focus lately has been on doing things in a big way; here at Marking Systems we are doing small labels in a big way. Recently we were asked if we could produce a label that measured only .25" X .72"; basically a quarter of an inch wide by three quarters of an inch long. The application was for placing the company logo on a small remote control with very limited space for name recognition on the product. The solution--use a Polyurethane Domed Label that would allow for a more durable label and also enhance the smaller size with the doming affect. Don’t Get “Stuck” Out in the Cold

The Winter Blasts of 2011 have blown across the country affecting all of our normal routines, ranging from just trying to get out the front door and to the car to keeping production lines up and running. With these cold blasts many production areas that are not completely climate controlled see their operating temperatures drop just as rapidly. Adjustments are made, heaters brought in and an extra layer or two of clothing added to keep warm. Another area to consider is the various materials used in production that can be affected by the lower temperatures. Labels are one of these items. The adhesives used on a majority of labels have a minimum application temperature of 50F. These include a wide variety of label applications; warning and caution, shipping, nameplates, overlays, serial and model number, and membrane switches. Check your temperatures and if below 50F look at storing labels in an area that is warmer and pull only what will be needed. When possible, warming the surface being applied to will also provide better adhering of the labels. Remember to keep all the critical appendages warm -- hands, head, feet and labels until spring arrives.

New Print Management Information System

This week we started the implementation phase for our new Print Management Information System. We've been working on the project since February 2010!

The program will replace our 30+ year old system used to estimated jobs, track work in progress, inventory - everything we do. The new application will cut down on a lot of duplicate effort and put the information you need at your fingertips instead of trying to dig through multiple screens of information. The new application will even let us use a mouse to drive the program, something we couldn't do with the old program.

The project started almost a year ago an after hours of Interviews, months of testing we hope to go live with the new application in May of this year.

Product Serial Number Label Redesign

O.I. Analytical in College Station, TX recently upgraded their thermal printer capabilities. At the same time they needed to redesign their Product Serial Number Label. They currently printed the serial and model numbers on the labels and did not have a print area for Bar Coding. Working with the customer the Marking Systems team provided design, construction and material input for the new label. This involved adding a blank print area for the bar code on the main label with a minimum increase in the overall size. Two support labels were added to the layout; each has a print area for a serial number and bar coding that will match the main label information. These revised labels will assist O.I. Analytical with better order flow, production tracking and faster inventory, all resulting in reduced costs.

Marking Systems is very proud to be a partner with Eazy Brow and its owner, Wendy McGee. Wendy is a cancer survivor herself and here is a little bit about her story and how she came to create this wonderful company.

On November 13, 2005, I was diagnosed with Stage IB ovarian cancer. I had to undergo 6 rounds of a Taxol/Carboplatin combination of chemotherapy as a precaution. After attending a class on chemotherapy, I had two concerns; hair loss and how much work I would miss. The hair loss concern had to do with losing my eyebrows. I was fine with losing the hair on my head, wearing a wig, and using eyeliner to deal with my eyelashes, but dealing with my eyebrows-BIG PROBLEM!
While sitting in my clinic treatment chair for all of my numerous chemotherapy sessions, I noticed that others like me had absolutely no facial hair, and how sad they appeared, and that's when the idea hit me.
After months of research of what was available in the marketplace to deal with this issue (or what was not available), I came up with this concept that I hope you will find to be the most convenient way to add some depth and contour to your face during this season of your life.
It is so true, "Beautiful Eyebrows Complete Your Face".

MSI worked closely with Wendy to help develop an overlay that gives women going through Chemo the dignity they deserve by providing them with a means of having eye brows. We assisted her in material selections as well as colors and product layout. In the end, we think this partnership will go a long way to improving the lives of cancer patients.

Signs provide us with a variety of information. When driving, signs provide directions, instructions, locations and advertising. Once out of your vehicle, you rely on signs to assist you in locating the correct building and entrance for your destination.

Metallic Overlays and labels

Apple seems to have popularized the metallic look. This look is relatively easy to acheive in the overlay, nameplate and label world. Metallic polyesters can be laminated subsurface on polycarbonate (Lexan) to give the product the metallic look and feel. Check out the attached pictures.

Saving money on labels, overlays and nameplates

Instead of using expensive under printed polycarbonate (Lexan) how about top printing on .002 polyester and laminating with a .0065 velvet polycarbonate laminate. Using this method allows you to utilize the new digital printing technologies which can really reduce the price significantly.

This is one of the most unique coolers I've ever seen! Everyone I've shown it to absolutely loves it and can't wait to get their own for their favorite driver. While enjoying the beach with the family, watching your children's sports games, boating, tailgating, or a list of a thousand other fun outdoor activities you will (up until now) find only a red, blue, white, or green cooler in different shapes and sizes.

Now, we offer you the first generation of artistic concept coolers presented by Cool Works Cup! You can make a personal statement by just showing up for that barbeque or NASCAR race. We are thrilled to provide that necessary edge and excitement! Our objective is to make a paradigm change in the ice chest or cooler market.
